Emily & Chris’ Intimate Rainy Day Wedding at the 1774 Inn in Phippsburg, Maine

Sometimes the unexpected makes a wedding day even more magical. For Emily and Chris, a rainy forecast meant moving their ceremony indoors—but it couldn’t have been more perfect. Their small group of 17 guests gathered in the cozy barn at the 1774 Inn in Phippsburg, ME for one of the most heartfelt and intimate ceremonies we’ve ever had the honor to witness.

When Emily & Chris toured venues they had a sign when visiting the Inn. After their tour, sitting on the deck overlooking the yard and river a bald eagle flew over. While we didn’t have any eagles on their day, nature definitely played a surprise role with appearances by a great blue heron and a hummingbird.

Emily got ready with her mom by her side, and later stepped into her beautiful dress she lovingly named “Flavia.” Chris spent his quiet morning getting ready inside the Inn, taking a moment for reflection before the day truly began.

As the rain softly tapped on the barn roof, there was a quiet warmth in the air that only comes from the closeness of family and the depth of love. This wedding felt like family from the very beginning. We didn’t feel like just photographers—we felt like part of something deeply personal and meaningful.

One of the most powerful moments came during the processional. For the first time, I stood behind the officiant to photograph the ceremony entrance, and I’m absolutely in love with the resulting angles and light. The perspective brought a new sense of closeness to the images that felt just right for the setting.

Emily walked down the aisle with her dad, but partway through the crowd, they paused. Her dad turned and brought her step-father to join them in walking her the rest of the way. It was a complete surprise to him, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room – including ours. Emily’s mom stood proudly beside her as her Matron of Honor, while Chris’ brother, Joe, served as his Best Man.

Emily’s love for animals, books, and the color pink was reflected in every thoughtful detail of the wedding. From decor accents to sweet surprises, her personality shined through. One of the most memorable gifts came from her mom, who surprised the newlyweds with a horse-drawn carriage ride after the ceremony. The rain held off just long enough for Magic Mike and Ace of Spades, the carriage horses, to take them for a romantic ride down the road, pausing by the river for some beautiful portraits.

Even Emily and Chris’ cat, Toby, had a part in the celebration. During the ceremony, their officiant Marianne shared a heartfelt passage filled with advice and blessings from Toby himself. It was a charming and emotional moment that had everyone smiling.

This wedding wasn’t about elaborate decorations or big moments, it was about meaningful gestures, deep connections, and the kind of love that fills a room. Emily and Chris’ wedding reminded us why we do what we do, and honestly, every wedding this season has felt like our favorite.

The rain may have shifted the plans, but the heart of the day remained unchanged. And in that warm, twinkle light filled barn filled with laughter and tears, Emily and Chris started their marriage surrounded by the people who matter most and that made it unforgettable.
