The Bar Harbor Inn Wedding of Hanna and Zach

As a Bar Harbor Inn Wedding Photographer, I’ve learned that some of the most memorable wedding days don’t go exactly as planned and that’s often what makes them so special. Hanna and Zach’s wedding day was a perfect example.

The first text I received that morning was from Hanna asking if we were still good to go with rain in the forecast. My answer was an easy “Absolutely!” Rain has never stopped us from documenting a wedding day. We come prepared for every type of weather with protective gear for our cameras, umbrellas, and a flexible mindset. In fact, after sharing one of my favorite images from Hanna and Zach’s wedding with a wedding planner friend, I learned that not every photographer is willing, or prepared, to photograph in the rain. It was a great reminder that couples should always ask their photographer about weather plans before the big day.

The day began with the guys getting ready in one of the rooms at the Bar Harbor Inn before switching spaces with the ladies. Throughout the morning, I kept discovering tiny ducks hidden in unexpected places. Family members would quickly swoop in, grab them, and hide them somewhere new. It turns out the tradition started after Hanna and Zach returned from a trip to find that their family had hidden 150 ducks throughout their house. Since then, duck-hiding has become part of every family gathering, and honestly, it may be one of my favorite wedding-day traditions ever.

There were also a few subtle nods to Taylor Swift woven throughout the day. The bridesmaids wore gowns inspired by the colors of the Speak Now era, a reference to the couple’s first concert together. Hanna paired her gorgeous tiered wedding dress with sparkly boots, and Zach’s brother, who officiated the ceremony, worked plenty of Taylor references into his remarks.

Before the rain arrived, I took Hanna out along the Ocean Walk at the Bar Harbor Inn for portraits. We played with her dress in the ocean breeze and created some truly beautiful images overlooking Frenchman Bay. Afterwards, I met up with Zach for his portraits before guests began arriving.

As the ceremony started, so did the rain. Guests raised their umbrellas and settled in as Hanna and Zach exchanged vows. The drizzle added an incredible atmosphere to the ceremony, and some of my favorite photographs from the entire season came from those moments.

After the ceremony, the skies cleared once again, allowing guests to enjoy cocktail hour on the patio overlooking the bay. Family and friends gathered to celebrate while speeches from Hanna’s sisters, her father, and Zach’s brother filled the room with laughter and happy tears.

Then, just as Hanna and Zach stepped onto the balcony for their first dance, another brief shower rolled through. Somehow it felt fitting. Their day had been a celebration of embracing whatever came their way, together. The storm eventually passed, leaving behind an opalite-colored sky that seemed almost too beautiful to be real. And as Taylor Swift fans would appreciate, they truly did “dance through the lightning strikes.”

Rain, ducks, Taylor Swift references, and a breathtaking waterfront setting. It was a wedding day that perfectly reflected Hanna and Zach: joyful, unique, and completely unforgettable.
