One of the greatest joys of my work as a Drakes Island family photographer is seeing how life comes full circle. Many years ago, I had the honor of photographing a wedding for one of this family’s relatives at The Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport. At the time, this side of the family couldn’t attend because of a high school graduation, but years later we finally connected for their own big family portrait session on Drakes Island in Wells, Maine.
This was more than just a photo session it was about capturing a moment in time for a family that has grown, changed, and weathered loss together. Family portraits hold so much meaning, not only for celebrating who is present today, but also for honoring those who are no longer with us. Sadly, one of the brothers had passed away during Covid. To keep his spirit close, his wife and daughter brought along a framed photo of him. Including him in the portraits was a powerful reminder that he remains a part of their family story.
There were a few tears as we carefully placed his photo among the group, but soon the mood shifted, smiles and laughter filled the beach as memories were shared. By the end of the evening, the family was splashing in the ocean, just as he would have loved.
That’s what makes family portraits so important. They aren’t just pictures on the wall; they’re memories that reflect love, resilience, and connection. Whether it’s grandparents holding their grandbabies, cousins laughing together, or honoring those who have passed, these images become part of a family’s legacy.
Drakes Island provided the perfect backdrop wide sandy beaches, gentle waves, and the space for everyone to come together. This session wasn’t just about beautiful photos, but about celebrating life, love, and togetherness in all its forms.
