The G Family’s Extended Family Photos on Squirrel Island

There’s something magical about Squirrel Island, a small, car-free summer community just off the coast of Boothbay Harbor. My morning began with an early ride on the island’s “mail boat” — the same vessel that carries residents, visitors, and their luggage to and from the mainland. While the later rides usually include a narrated tour of the harbor, the early morning crossing was quiet and peaceful, the sun just beginning to rise over the water.

As we approached the dock, I was greeted by Murielle’s dad and grandmother. While there wasn’t an official tour on the boat, I didn’t miss a thing, between the two of them, I got a rich, personal history of the island that no brochure could match. They spoke of summers spent exploring the island’s rocky shoreline, multi-generational traditions, and how the community has evolved over the decades.

Murielle had scheduled this session to commemorate a lifetime legacy at Squirrel Island and to celebrate her dad’s 60th birthday, two milestones woven together in a place their family has called theirs for generations. “I love having high-quality photos of our family to look back on,” she told me, “to memorialize certain eras and capture every detail of our lives together, as it is right now.”

From barefoot kids on the porch to belly laughs from Murielle’s immediate family. They’re active, close-knit, and love spending time outdoors fishing, playing games, and simply being together.

We made sure to capture moments that matter most: the entire family gathered on the iconic back porch of their cottage, a few groupings on the front porch, and timeless candids of Murielle’s grandparents. Her grandfather, a retired Air Force colonel, and her grandmother share a love story shaped by decades of devotion, cross-country moves, and unwavering support. Watching them together, even in simple, quiet moments sharing coffee on the porch, was incredibly moving.

Murielle also wanted to capture some portraits with her husband and two children at one of their favorite spots on the island, a small stretch of shoreline where memories continue to be made.

Sessions like this are why I love what I do. It’s more than just photographing people, it’s about documenting stories, connection, and legacy in places that mean the world to them.

Squirrel Island Photographer, it’s not a title I get to use often, but I’m incredibly grateful for mornings like this, where the fog lifts, the light is golden, and the heart of a family shines through in every frame.
