If you’re planning a Western Maine Mountains wedding chances are you are already a bit familiar with the area. Whether you picked the location because you like to hike or ski/snowboard the mountains in the winter, you love being outdoors! Maybe you love to golf or possibly even do a little river rafting and lake swimming. This area has the adventurer in you covered!
As always with our “what to do” lists, we are recommending places and things we’ve done ourselves and we are updating the list as we do more in the area!
What to do in the Western Maine Mountains
Sunday River
In the winter their main focus is skiing and snowboard but in the summer the area is alive with lots to do as well. The Sunday River campus has a lot of stuff going on. If you’re staying on property, or even if you’re not – they’ve got golfing, scenic lift rides, kayaking, stand up paddle boards and archery. Check out all their offerings here: Sunday River
Hiking
There are so many big and small hikes in the area. I can highly recommend Step Falls. It’s one of the easiest hikes in the area with natural step waterfall with lots of natural slides and pools to cool off in. Parking is limited here so I recommend getting here early to get a spot!
There’s also Table Rock & Baldplate. It’s labeled as the “best short hike in Maine”. With a 2.4mi trail rated as “moderate” in Grafton Notch State Park. There’s also options to continue on to Baldplate Mountain to make a total of 7.6mi.
Speaking of Grafton Notch State Park, there are so many hikes located inside this park and several spots with waterfalls! It’s worth checking out everything on AllTrails in the area. You won’t be disappointed!
It’s not a “hike” technically but it’s a fun afternoon stroll. The Bethel Covered Bridge is a beautiful stop with some trails through the woods alongside the river. It’s also known as the Artists Bridge.
Food
Unfortunately our favorite place to eat in Bethel is no longer there so the best we can do is offer up a list of area restaurants and let you dive in for yourself! If you find any must-eat places, please let us know as we are on the hunt for a new spot! Where to Eat in Bethel
Rangeley
If you’re heading a bit further north, Rangeley is such a great town with spectacular views over the lake. While you’re there, the must visit location is Height of the Land. It’s just a turn out off the road but it is the best view ever! Located about 10 miles south of Oquossoc on Route 17.
Smalls Falls is another great hike/waterfall with a picnic area and lots to do. Located South of Rangeley by about 12 miles on Route 4.
