As an Old Saco Inn Wedding Photographer, I can honestly say that Kate and Derry’s wedding was one for the books. Nestled in the heart of Fryeburg, Maine, the Old Saco Inn provided the perfect blend of natural beauty and cozy elegance for their celebration. Though the couple now lives in New York City, Kate’s Maine roots made it a meaningful choice for their wedding day, and Derry’s Chinese heritage added a rich cultural depth to every detail.
From the very start, nods to tradition were woven seamlessly into the day. Their invitations featured both English and Chinese characters, setting the tone for a celebration that honored both of their backgrounds. The vibrant red color palette, a symbol of luck and prosperity, was carried throughout the day, from the florals to subtle details. Kate even designed her necklace specifically to complement her dress, a perfect finishing touch that tied her whole look together.
The first look was one of those unforgettable moments: pure joy and happy tears as they saw each other for the first time. Afterward, we headed to the property’s picturesque covered bridge for portraits with family and friends, where laughter kept the atmosphere light and fun. Including lots of thumbs up from Derry’s dad!
When it came time for the ceremony, both Kate and Derry walked down the aisle with their parents, a beautiful way of honoring their families. Officiated by a close friend, the ceremony was heartfelt yet full of laughter, perfectly reflecting who they are as a couple. One of the sweetest moments came when they decided who would read their vows first with a game of “rock, paper, scissors.” Kate’s words brought Derry to tears once again, a testament to their deep connection. And even when the rings were briefly forgotten in the loft, the pause only added to the charm of the day. Soon they were back on track, exchanging rings and sealing their promises.
The evening unfolded with a delicious meal and a lively reception. Since Kate and Derry first met through ballroom dance, their first dance was nothing short of incredible. They choreographed a polished, emotional performance that had their guests cheering. Their friends from the same dance class kept the energy going, showing off fancy footwork that made the dance floor one of the fanciest we’ve seen.
