What Every Couple Needs to Know
We love engagement sessions! It’s important to us because we get to meet up and get to know each other while having a lot of fun. This is a great time for you to see how we shoot and for you to comfortable in front of the camera, learn all your best angles and we all have a great time!
We like to plan your engagement session like a date. Lets dream up something fun for you to do! Wine and cheese in the middle of a blossoming apple orchard? Smores and a bonfire on the beach? Hiking into a waterfall? Biking around a scenic island or even jumping in the surf – we’ve got you covered (and some props too!)
We love creating special scenes for you to come and just be yourselves. We do some basic posing but also let you sit back and enjoy the time together.
This guide will walk you through the brainstorming process of the What, Where, When and How but know that we are always available to chat with you on anything! We want to create the most amazing session that you’ll remember. Not just for the stunning images of the two of you, but the whole experience!
The When and the Where
Like they say in Real Estate: Location is everything
It really is! We like to plan our engagement sessions to be specific to each couple so working with you on your hobbies, interests, and locations you love is key. Love camping? Lets set up a tent and campfire! The beach is your favorite destination? Perfect! We know a TON of beaches from rocky coastlines to sandy beaches. There are really so many options when it comes to the “where” for your engagement session!
The When of planning your engagement session can vary based on what you have in mind! Most of our couples book us about a year out from their wedding so we have all four seasons to choose from.
• Spring gives us blossoms on the trees and picnics in apple orchards full of blooms
• Summer gives us warm temps and sunny days. The oceans are starting to warm up and the lakes are perfect!
• Fall – can we just say foliage! There’s also apple picking and snuggling by campfires!
• Winter is for those brave couples who enjoy the cold and cold weather activities! We will gladly trek into the woods for some sledding or even up the mountain for skiing/snowboarding and then back to the lodge for a hot toddy around the fireplace.
Just like there Where and When – Timing is everything! Just before sunrise and an hour before Sunset are the best light for most locations however sessions in the woods and activities such as skiing can be done most any time of day.
The World is Your Oyster
You’ve heard this before! But when it comes to your engagement session, it’s TRUE!
We are avid travelers and are up for going anywhere in the world with you for your engagement session (and your wedding!).
If you’re planning a destination wedding, we are there several days before your big day so why not plan your engagement session for that location as well! You’re in paradise, you’re relaxed, it’s the most amazing setting ever! So lets go for it!
If you’re not planning a destination wedding but still want a destination engagement session we would love to work with you to plan that!
Want your images captured with the setting sun over the ocean? We’ve got that! The canals of Venice? Check! Dancing in front of the Eiffel Tower? We’ll bring our dancing shoes too!
We are experienced with traveling domestically and abroad with all of our gear so you never have to worry about anything! We have backup plans upon backup plans to ensure that everything goes off without a hitch!
Pack your bags. We’re going on an adventure!!
The Clothes!
Last but not least comes planning your outfits! As you’ve seen through the guide our couples choose a variety of outfits for their sessions. We also bring along a pop up changing tent for when one outfit just won’t do.
We encourage you to look through both our portfolio and Pinterest for ideas on what you’d like to wear. Take into consideration the time of year and location of your session. You don’t want to show up to a camping theme session in a ball gown – but you may just want to wear that gown on the beach! Paired with a nice suit on him, that combo on the beach would be a show stopper!
From stepping out of an LL Bean catalog to stepping into an amazing number from Rent The Runway – there are just so many options!
You don’t have to come matching, in fact we strongly suggest against that! But coordinating is good. We are always available via Skype/FaceTime to go over options with you. But a few basic rules are to avoid tiny prints and logos on your clothes. A small logo is fine, but the larger ones that are splashed across the whole front of your shirt are distracting in your photos. We want to see you! Not the brand of your clothes! Another good idea is to pick a palate of colors that flatters you both! Navy goes great with pretty much any pop of color: Green, Pink, White, etc! All those add a classic nautical feel! Plaids are good if you’re planning a woodsy theme. We suggest one person in plaid and the other in a solid sweater of a coordinating color. If you opt for a gown, it’s always best to pair it with a similarly dressed up suit or even a tux!
And ladies! Here’s a good excuse to go get your hair and make up professionally done! It’s going to give you a boost of confidence and it’s a good trial for your wedding day look too! We have a few hair and make up artists we can connect you to as well!
